Royal Society Mencap

This is a national charity formed over 60 years ago. They work with people with learning disabilities and their family carers to sort out issues affecting people’s lives.

Royal Society Mencap Affiliation

Herefordshire Mencap is a local society and is affiliated to Royal Society Mencap. This means that Herefordshire Mencap can make its own decisions about how it works, but if it wants to keep the Mencap name, have support from the Royal Society and other things, it has to become affiliated. Each year Herefordshire Mencap pays an affiliation fee for this.

The Royal Society is now asking all local societies to agree to certain standards. The committee will be looking at these standards over the next few months.

Patricia Hackett – District Officer

Patricia is employed by Royal Society Mencap to support people with learning disabilities, their family carers, the local society and Gateway clubs in Herefordshire. Her office is in Worcester.

Partnership Board

The Board started in October 2001, following guidelines set out by ‘Valuing People’.

All plans affecting local people with learning disabilities and their family carers are decided by the Board. People with learning disabilities should be members of the Board: this is being sorted out at the moment.

Most of the work done by the Board is done in sub-groups.

Partnership Board Newsletter

‘News & Views’ is a monthly newsletter which contains information about the Partnership Board and anything else that is being talked about in the Learning Disability Community. Would you like a copy each month - Ask Rose.

Annual General Meeting

The Charity Commissioners require Herefordshire Mencap to hold an Annual General Meeting every year. The officers of the charity are elected. The officers are the Chairman, Vice-chairman, Treasurer and members of the Executive Committee. The accounts for the past year are also presented for everyone to look at and to ask questions about them. The Annual General Meeting is usually held in February.

Charity Commissioners

The Charity Commissioners are the national organisation that makes sure that any charity is being organised properly. The Commissioners ask for details about the committee, and copies of the latest accounts and annual report.
